Women-only rides: travelling safely in a shared car in India

How women-only rides on Tezzo work, who can publish and book them, why both sides need a verified ID, and the checks every woman travelling alone should make.

For many women, the question about a shared ride is not the price or the route. It is who else will be in the car. Women-only rides exist for exactly that: a woman driver publishes the ride, and only women can book a seat on it.

This guide explains how they work and what else you can do to travel with confidence.

How women-only rides work

  • A woman driver publishes them. When she sets up the ride, she can mark it Women only.
  • Only women passengers can book. Anyone else who tries is told the ride is reserved for women.
  • Both sides need a verified ID. The driver needs a verified ID to publish a women-only ride, and every passenger needs one to book it. A gender written on a profile is easy to type; a government ID checked by the Tezzo team is not. That is why this rule exists.
  • The ride is marked on the search results and on the ride page, so you know before you book.

Verifying your ID

Open your profile and choose to verify your government ID. You can use your Aadhaar, Driving License or Passport. The Tezzo team looks at each document by hand, and once it is approved your profile shows a verified badge. Your full ID number is never shown to other users.

Do this before you need the ride. Verification takes a person to review it, so a day or two before a trip is better than an hour before.

Finding a women-only ride

Search your route and date as usual. Women-only rides appear in the results with their label. If there is none yet on your route, tap Create a ride alert, and Tezzo tells you when a ride is published.

If no women-only ride fits, you can still check any ride carefully: the driver's photo, rating, experience level and how many booked rides they cancelled in the last 12 months are all on the ride page.

Driving? Offer your seats to women

If you are a woman driving between cities, a women-only ride lets you share the fuel cost with other women only. Verify your ID, publish the ride and switch on Women only. You still choose: accept each request yourself, or let passengers book instantly. Our driver's guide covers the rest, from the pickup point to a fair seat price.

Checks for every trip

Women-only or not, these take a minute and are worth it:

  1. Read the profile before you book: photo, rating, experience level, cancellations.
  2. Use the in-app chat to agree on the pickup point, luggage and payment. Keep the conversation in the app.
  3. Pick a public pickup point, like a metro station or a busy petrol pump, in daylight when you can.
  4. Share your trip details with family or a friend from the app before you leave.
  5. Never pay in advance. You pay the driver directly, in cash or by UPI, when you travel.
  6. Know where SOS is. During the ride, the SOS button lets you call 112, call your emergency contact, or send your location to someone you trust.

Your phone number is shown only to the people on a confirmed booking.

If something is wrong

Report a driver from the ride page (Report this driver), or a passenger from your Driver Dashboard, and the Tezzo team reviews it. You can also block anyone, and after that neither of you sees the other's rides. Rate honestly after the trip; it helps the next woman decide.

Our carpool safety guide has the full checklist for passengers and drivers.
